Like most hikers, I am always searching for the perfect boot or hiking shoe. I want something light, waterproof, supportive, comfortable, reasonably priced, and with good traction. Lastly, although certainly not required, a more muted style with a minimum of flashy colors and bizarre patterns is my preference as well.

I have tried countless boots and they always seem to fall short of perfection for one reason or another. My first pair that I loved dearly were the cheapest of the bunch; they fell apart after my first serious week-long hiking trip. I've progressed up the price ladder and still had various issues with many brands; split soles, leaking "waterproof" boots, cinder-block-heavy full-support all-leather or minimal support mid-hikers, you name it. I feel like I've never found the perfect combination, and there seem to be just too many options out there to try them all. Trips to REI end up in a mountain of opened boot boxes, none of which are "just right".

So this year I decided to go with the recommendation of Backpacker magazine and give these a try. Normally I avoid the "Best of" recommendations since they (miraculously) change every year, and instead try to find the best for me. But, for lack of better options, I gave the TrekSta GTX Hiking Shoe a try after their glowing recommendation.

First, the pros -- these are so light! They are as light as sneakers yet hold up like boots. They are comfortable right out of the box and I have had no hot spots even with a 30-40lb pack for sustained distances. They hold up to serious water and mud with no leaks. Ankle support is apparent although I haven't had a serious twist yet to see if they provide meaningful support. The lacing system is nice as well and allow me to rapidly tie them up. There is only one level of "hook" tyle lacing (the rest are eyelets), which makes it much faster to tie up.

The cons -- there aren't many but they should be considered. Due to the way the lacing system is designed, the top row of laces can sometimes slip down and the tongue on the boot will pop out a bit, resulting in a looser fit and less ankle support. I can tie the laces tighter to keep the tongue in, but then it seems to be too tight for my feet. Not a huge deal but this is something I have noticed. Of more concern is the tread. This is a light boot/shoe but the tread could be a tad more agressive. I found myself slipping in muddy conditions where my heavier boots with more aggressive treads had much less trouble.

Overall, this is an excellent lightweight hiking shoe based on my experience. I've put maybe 50-75 miles on them so far and have few complaints. With a few design tweaks this could be the perfect hiking boot/shoe.

I had seen these at a boot store in downtown Nashville and really liked them. I got them here for considerably less money. I'm glad that I did try them on in Nashville since I usually wear 1/2 to full size larger than this so they seemed to fit big.

This brand is owned by Rocky Boots and is made in China. The leather is soft and they fit well. I wanted a casual looking boot that was comfortable and that I could wear motorcycling or just hanging out. These fit the bill just fine.

FiveTen Siren Climbing Shoe,Merlot,8 D US Review

I bought this pair to replace the 2009 version of the FiveTen Sirens that I had previously. These ones seem to fit a bit roomier than my old ones in width (maybe 1/4 size), despite the fact that my previous ones had stretched half a size in the years of use. The toes are a little tigher, but I expect those to stretch.

I am not a fan of the color - the old ones were blue and showed chalk a little less and were more my style.

Sadly, these shoes retained the one thing that I disliked about my old shoes and they got rid of one of my favorite features

The Same: The eyelets for the laces are soft suede-like fabric, which rip quite easily. After a few months with my old shoes, the top loops ripped and I could only tighten my shoe lower, which made heel-hooks impossible, since I can't cinch the shoe tight to my upper foot. I had hoped this new version would include some reinforcement, but it doesn't.

The Change: The new version of the shoes no longer come with speed bungee laces. I had put off using the speed laces for a year, but when I switched, I LOVED the fit. The thin stretch laces allow you to pull from the top and the entire shoe equalizes to a consistent tightness, unlike with the standard bump-style laces that come with the newer shoe, which require lots of fiddling to get each row of laces in the right place. This wouldn't be such a big deal, either, if I didn't have to be so careful not to pull on the laces for fear of ripping the shoe.

Despite how much I love the other features of this shoe (comfortable enough to wear all day, great stiffness for slab, much better fit and durability than the more popular Evolv Elektras), unless FiveTen updates these issues, this will likely be my last pair of Sirens.

I should also note here that these shoes are mostly great for top-roping with a specialty for slab. I would likely go with a softer and down-ward curved shoe if you are more into overhangs or bouldering.

Alegria Women's Avril Black Full Grain Leather Size 35 Medium Review

I've had a pair of Alegria Mary Janes for a long time, and they are so comfortable, I wanted a pair of boots for cooler weather. While the current line of boots isn't as aesthetically appealing as last season's options, the Avrils are quite nice. They are soft leather, same soft but supportive cork foot bed, and high quality materials. They fit a bit more loosely than the Mary Janes, yet not so much that I could wear a smaller size. For that reason, I'm not 100% thrilled with the fit. Half sizes are not available. Likewise, the ankle straps aren't adjustable. They are purely decoration. The fit isn't so bothersome as to dislike them, it's just not what I'm used to in a boot.

Generally speaking, the whole line of shoes is great and worth a try if you are on your feet a lot, have foot conditions, or if your feet get sore easily.

Sorel Women's Joplin Boot,Caramel,7 M US Review

This boot is a cute commuter boot; meaning it'll get you dry from point A to point B dry no problem but it is not designed to withstand long durations to extreme conditions.
I like that it has a moccassin look. It is the "shell" of the boot world. No fur or insulation/liner on the inside of the boot so it is not designed to keep you warm. I would imagine it would be a nice boot to have to trek to and from work in extreme conditions but yet not overheat once your inside (I live in So Cal so I don't have to deal with that :). I have to wear this boot with my thick socks (hiking). There is slight padding on the inner sole so it is fairly comfortable. The sole is much stiffer than I expected, but not uncomfortably so. There is a significant amount of rubber on the heel and pad of the foot for traction, and I haven't had slippage problems yet. The laces are simply leather bands so it doesn't cinch up super tight, but the laces grip themselves well so I don't worry about them loosening.
I typically wear this shoe on rainy days here (commuting to and from work- it stands up well) stepping in puddles and what not, but it wouldn't lasts if I sat outside for several hours in the rain. I have a classic pair of Sorel Tivoli's I wear when I want waterproof without a doubt (if you're looking for dependability and cute- get a pair of printed Tivoli's)- but those have a liner with a fur lip so they're considerably warmer. I wore this boot to Mammoth on a spring snowboard trip recently it is did fine until I sat in the snow playing with my kids for a couple hours. The toes started to get saturated and I felt some moisture, but I'm not too surprised.
Also, in my Tivoli's I wear an eight and in this shoe although I also got an 8 I would definitely say it is a snugger fit. If you're in doubt; size up.
These are about $90 on Amazon- if I paid that price I wouldn't of been pleased for what I paid for. However I got them one sale straight from the Sorel manufacturer/website for $50 so I'm content with them.
Overall: Cute/trendier, good for short exposure to extreme conditions, fairly comfortable for a "shell" of a boot
