How the boot fell apart was the boot sole actually split in half across the width of the boot while walking. The entire sole split all the way through with no other damage to the boot. I contacted the manufacturer, Carolina, who admitted to me that the boot was defective but their their return policy was to return the boots to the retailer. In this case it was SHOES.COM via Amazon.com. I have usually been completely satisfied with Amazon.com and their customer service but this situation was different. Amazon.com had me get in contact with the actual retailer SHOES.COM and SHOES.COM has you reply to them outside of Amazon.com's email service so Amazon.com does not have record of their correspondence.

So after Carolina told me it was a defective product and there was a 1 year warranty in place I followed through by filing a claim for defective product as I was told to do. SHOES.COM responded to me saying my boots were in fact not defective and there was no return and "no recourse" available. Amazon.com stated that I could not file an A-Z claim as it was past the standard claim time. And then SHOES.COM left a comment on Amazon.com stating more than 90 days had passed.

So in a nutshell, I purchased a defective boot and even though the manufacturer agreed that it was defective and covered under a 1 year warranty, you can not return this item if you get a defective product. I will go out of my way in the future to not purchase shoes from SHOES.COM because of this one issue alone. Buyer Beware.

**UPDATE**
After requesting tracking information for the return of my boots I received an email from SHOES.COM saying they were unable to provide tracking information. So they have now effectively simply taken the boots away and refused to replace them or refund them, now accusing me of being frustrated with their return policy. If my defective boots are ever returned to me I will post a video review to show the damage of the split sole.
